Exploring Seascape in Print

Most of my adult and life with my family has been in Wicklow and I have a curiosity and passion for its varied landscape of coast and mountains. I am inspired by the grandeur and drama of my local coastline cliffs with their sharp structural forms, visual linear rhythms, changing patterns and cycles of tide and seasons.
In my drawings and photography, I investigate the forms and structure of the landscape both through direct drawn observation and in a more personally expressive and imaginative way with emphasis on the rhythmic line and textures and colours that I observe.

In both my topics of research, I am drawn to strong graphic imagery, bold and bright colours, and the play of elements in compositions. This work evolves through building layers of overlapping colour, linear patterns, and texture to both build and obscure images. I have explored mark-making, textures and translucent inks in my printmaking process, responding to my subject matter by interacting directly with the blocks by drawing and painting onto them as a way of personally responding and building or obscuring the imagery. I will return to my landscape in the future.

This print is based on my local coastal seascape. It is the combination of rhythmic patterns of water, sky, and sea that catch my attention and draw me into the moment. Its the turning of corners and finding moments of drama that encourage me to explore and respond to the drama.

Looking South-Travelehawk Beach
Multi-Block Lino Print
4 Colours Hosho Japanese 90gms
Limited Edition 25
This image is based on a view from above a well-known beach in Wicklow town. Wicklow town is surrounded by rocky shores to the north and small black cliffs to the south. For me, the mood and drama is always changing as are the colours and textures.
In this piece I am looking at the textures and marks that infuse the cliff and shores

The Arrival of Spring
Multi-Block Lino Print
4 Colours on Hosho Japanese 90gms Paper
Limited Edition 20
This print combines my twin interests of Perceptions and Landscape. It was made during the time of pandemic when getting out for long walks was difficult and meeting people even more difficult. It in ways expresses what I perceived to be our common fears of the environment and I like to think it leans towards hope with its light in the background and the bright future heralded by the cherry blossoms.
