Art in the Pandemic

It was during the pandemic that I was first drawn to the idea of people and masks. Like most people, my life, the life of my family, friends, and neighbors was hugely impacted by the need for isolation and lockdown. Life slowed down, social interactions dwindled, and we spent a lot of time in our own worlds and sometimes too long in our own heads with our thoughts and concerns. I observed people's habits while mask-wearing, how some were negatively impacted, and how their fears and anxieties were very much in evidence despite being protected and hidden behind the mask. I become more appreciative of what I have, it encouraged me to reconsider my own values and to reprioritise what's important to me and my family.
The Herald of Spring
Lino Print
Black on Fabriano Rossapina 220gms Paper
Limited Edition
This is the first print I made during the pandemic. It was inspired by the imagery of mask-wearing during World War II. This print highlights for me how we have faced uncertainties and massive changes in previous generations, but despite this, we persisted, endured, and survived. Although bleak and dark for me it tells of spirit and resilience.

The Arrival of Spring
Multi-Block Lino Print
4 Colours on Hosho Japanese 90gms Paper
Limited Edition 20
This print combines my twin interests of Perceptions and Landscape. It was made during the time of pandemic when getting out for long walks was difficult and meeting people even more difficult. It in ways expresses what I perceived to be our common fears of the environment and I like to think it leans towards hope with its light in the background and the bright future heralded by the cherry blossoms.

The Walk
Lino Print
Black on Japanese Hosho Paper
Limited Edition 20
This print combines my interests in human fears and Landscape. It was made during the time of pandemic when getting out for long walks was difficult and meeting people even more so. For me, it expresses our common fears at that time, masking up, and locked down, but it leans towards hope as it allowed us to develop stronger family bonds, with a slow down in daily routines and activities.
