Terry Lawless

Terry Lawless-Contemporary Artist and Printmaker

Terry lives and works in Wicklow and is currently working in paint and print, he is currently researching and exploring issues of identity and perception, how we see ourselves and others through lenses, and how we think others perceive us. How we create and wear our own masks as a means of identity and belonging, both as means of becoming other than ourselves and as a way of masking and hiding our true thoughts, feelings, and identities.

Artist Statement

My work as an artist is evolving and developing. Through my printmaking and painting, I am experimenting and developing my artistic process, exploring various subject matter and a variety of media. I have been putting my drawn and printed work out into the world for viewers to engage with and respond to.

In printmaking, it is the physical interaction with lino blocks that has drawn me to this form of printing making. The marking and drawing onto the lino blocks with ink and brush. The rhythm of line and the impact of overlapping colours, the cutting and carving of lines and shapes, as well as the thinking, and problem-solving of getting images from my mind or sketchbook onto the blocks and to bring them to life as prints on paper.
